NO DISTANCE TOO FAR: ST. JOHN BOSCO'S UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO THE EUCHARIST
"A 9-year-old walked miles barefoot for Mass—what's your excuse?"
I am writing a small incident that happened in the life of St. John Bosco, who was the patron saint for the youth. In the serene hills of 19th-century Italy, St. John Bosco,
later to be the "Father and Teacher of Youth," who we are calling as “Don Bosco” had an
extraordinary devotion to the Eucharist since his young years, preferring Jesus
to convenience by traveling miles barefoot to Mass, a self-denial which began
in his poor childhood where his mother was forced to make a choice between
bread or shoes, so he would slip out before dawn to avoid his stepbrother's
taunts, slog 3-4 miles to church in inclement weather, and go without breakfast
in order not to miss Mass.
Reflection:
How long has it been since we sacrificed something for Jesus? A warm bed? A
meal? 10 extra minutes of sleep?
Remarkably, John remembered each of the sermons, repeating
them word for word to his children, a gift that made him one of the Church's
greatest preachers, mesmerizing masses for hours, indicating he didn't just
"hear" the Word but allowed it to transform him.
One cold winter, when Mama Margherita found him freezing
with dead feet, she handed him over hers, teaching him that sacrifice is part
of loving Jesus, but He never forsakes those who seek Him.
What This Means for You: Small sacrifices lead to sainthood,
God multiplies faithfulness, and the Eucharist is worth prioritizing.
